Are Wisconsin Veterans Being Shortchanged? The Fight for Expanded Property Tax Relief
At Integrity Homes, we believe supporting our veterans isn't optional — it's essential. But with political games heating up in Madison, critical housing relief for our local heroes could be at risk.
John Reuter, founder of Integrity Homes and a proud USAF veteran, recently sat down with State Representative Alex Joers to discuss explosive new proposals in the Wisconsin State Legislature — and the fierce debate already brewing.
Here's what’s on the line for the expanded Veterans Property Tax Credit and the new Rental Housing Credit — and why your voice might be the only thing that saves them.
Expanding the Veterans Property Tax Credit — Or Losing It?
One of the biggest promises in the proposed state budget is expanding the Veterans Property Tax Credit. Currently, only veterans with a 100% disability rating qualify.
The new proposal would lower eligibility to 70% disability, opening the door for thousands of additional veterans. Sounds like a no-brainer, right?
Unfortunately, some lawmakers are already hinting they may strip this provision out during negotiations.
If that happens:
-
Thousands of Wisconsin veterans could miss out on property tax savings.
-
Families who have sacrificed so much for our country could face skyrocketing costs without relief.
-
Another opportunity to truly honor service members would be lost in political crossfire.
Rep. Joers called it out directly: "We need to keep pushing to make sure this survives the budget process."
Rental Housing Credit: A Lifeline or an Empty Promise?
Renters — particularly low-income veterans — are also supposed to get a break through a new Rental Housing Credit proposal.
If passed, this credit would:
-
Offer direct tax relief to struggling renters.
-
Help veterans who can’t afford to buy in this competitive market.
-
Make housing just a little bit more accessible in Dane County and beyond.
But again — it’s far from guaranteed. Without strong public support, these life-changing credits could quietly disappear before the budget is finalized.
The Real Story for Madison and Dane County
While the media focuses on political drama, here’s what’s really at stake:
-
Veterans and working families could lose vital support.
-
Property taxes could continue to rise unchecked.
-
Local communities could see even greater housing instability.
Rep. Joers and John Reuter both agreed: we need to cut through the noise and fight for the programs that actually help people.
Time Is Running Out: Take Action Now
These proposals are hanging by a thread. Here's how YOU can make a difference:
-
Contact your state legislator and demand they protect veterans' housing credits.
-
Show up at budget hearings and town halls.
-
Share this article and spread the word — before it’s too late.
